Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa

I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

OMG! So good so good so good!

I loved this book! I love fantasy and I love Japanese inspired books and this had both!!!!

I really liked Yumeko. She was a strong girl and I loved her! She was rarely outed as a Kitsune so I guess she was really good a hiding her true self. I can’t quite imagine what she really looks like. How weird would it be to have fox ears and a tail?

Tatsumi was also really good. I felt really bad for him though.

He seems a lot older than he is because of it.

There were a lot of twists in this book. It started off very confusing and then got so much better.

The things I disliked was that it was very confusing for the first 5 chapters or so. You really have to pay attention to the synopsis or you can really easily get lost those first few chapters.

Also I’m not sure if it was an issue with my copy or it hasn’t been created yet but why are there two pages that simply say MAP TK in brackets? I’m assuming since the dedication is also missing that it means to come???

Also I really wish there had been a glossary and maybe some history about the creatures. This is only a personal wish not something I’m critiquing on.

I’m also a bit mad that in general Netgalley is biased towards Kindle. I own a kobo and quite often I have to deal with what I call wasted space issues that make it very difficult to read because of the small font. Rant done. Love this book. Hope I get accepted for the next one!!!

I was going to give this a 4 star until I realized that this is clearly not YA despite being labelled YA. There were some detailed sex scenes in this book that are not appropriate for YA books.

As an adult book I enjoyed this though. I had some issues at the beginning with so much information being thrown at me but it all came together at the end.

I liked Eliana’s POV the most. Although towards the end I did start to not like her as much. Just too reckless for me.

I loved that she was bisexual. This is the first time I’m reading a book about a Bi MC.

I found Rielle to be a bit whiny so I didn’t like her as much but I she was still a decent character.

I both liked and disliked the angel element.

I am looking forward to the next book.. 🙂

NON SPOILER REVIEW (FIRST TIME TRYING A TO WRITE A NON SPOILER REVIEW.)

This book started out as a 1 or 2 star for me but gradually at about 50% or so it moved up to a 3 star. It still wasn’t great but it wasn’t a, ‘I would DNF this if it wasn’t an ARC/BR.’

I liked Enne more towards the end of the book when she grew a spine. I’m very interested in her powers.

I liked Levi alright. I appreciated that he was Bi. That seems to be a trend with the ARCs I’ve received this year and I think it’s going to be the trend of 2018. LGBT with a emphasis on B.

I had a hard time picturing him as young and black though. Particularly at the beginning. I though he would be 40 or so. About Enne’s mother’s age. I even though we might be her father until I learned he is the same age as her!

I was sad that they didn’t end up together. I have a feeling this will be a slow romance.

I’m not sure how I feel about Lola or Jac. I’m glad that Jac is loyal but he seems to have a lot of issues. Same with Lola. It doesn’t seem like the book took place over 10 days! O.o

The truth about Enne’s talents and parents was a shock!

Overall not bad. Could definitely have been improved though. I felt like I was thrown into an interesting series but started at the second or third book. A lot needs explaining.
